Data Science and Informatics (DSI) Club
Data Science and Informatics Club (DSI) is a student community for anything data-related. Through workshops, general board meetings(GBM), club collaborations, career fairs, research projects, socials, and our Spring Symposium, DSI has created many opportunities for students to become involved with data.
By having bi-weekly events this school year and expanding our social media presence, DSI has grown tremendously. Aside from representing at the student organization fair, many measures have been taken to increase our club footprint and appeal to students far and wide. In just five months, our Instagram has grown 600% and our new GroupMe has 180 members. By utilizing hy-flex during the pandemic, we have been able to have a zoom and in-person option for nearly all events. This allowed our Spring GBM 0 attendance to surpass fifty people!
The University of Florida has over 1,000 student organizations. This year DSI decided to take advantage of that and collaborate with many other clubs. Already we’ve partnered with Stats Club, Retail Society, and Undergraduate Consulting Club. Additionally we just completed our Personal Finance Analytics Bash in collaboration with Personal Finance Club, University Economics Society, and Stats Club! This outreach will allow us to grow our community and invite other organizations to participate in our signature event: Spring Symposium.
Professors, graduate students, student organizations, and many DSI committees will come together this spring to put on a massive event celebrating data and how it relates to the world. For a whole day in the Reitz Union, students and faculty alike will be invited to see DSI’s community at work.
Internally, DSI is excited to announce two new features: research projects and Homework and Hang. DSI wouldn’t exist without our home, the Informatics Institute. This incredible space includes a classroom, conference room, and many desks. This spring DSI members will be able to join us in studying and completing homework in a collaborative space. This will aid in problem-solving and create tutoring opportunities. During this time members may also choose to work on data projects outside of school. Many of our Junior Executives have the title: project coordinator. Each of these executives will be organizing a research project using DSI resources and members. At the end of the semester, they will be able to showcase a complete data project- something companies love to see from prospective employees.
One of DSI’s main goals is to prepare students for technical jobs. By attending our resume and interview workshops, students will be ready for our career fair this week which features many top companies. Here students will have the opportunity to interview for internships, Co-Ops, or full-time jobs. To learn the technical skills required for these roles, students may attend our many workshop series using tools such as Python, R, SQL, Tableau, and Excel. These workshops provide students with well-rounded data knowledge that any company would be happy to see on a resume.
DSI is happy to say that we’ve not just existed, we’ve thrived. We are so excited for the upcoming months as we have much in store. We are still looking for clubs to collaborate with, exciting talks for our symposium, and as always more data-driven members. Let us know if you’re interested in any of our many opportunities!
