“Polyhedral Spline Modeling”

by Kyle Lo

Monday, March 21, 2022 HYBRID: In-person with lunch at 11:30AM; live and zoom talk at noon

ABSTRACT:

Point clouds or triangle meshes are not efficient for 3D modeling or physical simulation due to a lack of structure and high-level control. Tensor-product (B-)splines are instead used in industry, both for high-end design and finite element analysis (FEA); but conversion is difficult and, due to the grid structure of the tensor-product, pieces need to be carefully cut and reassembled to be able to approximate shape. Polyhedral splines enable gap-free surfaces controlled by sparse polyhedral control nets. Each net can be viewed as a point in high-dimensional shape space.

This work aims to automatically model 3D shapes by polyhedral splines via the classical approach of splitting the nonlinear task. (a) given connectivity of the control net, optimize the placement of the control points. (b) optimizing the control net connectivity graph (topology). Determining the topology is by far the harder task related to integer optimization problems. To avoid NP-completeness, we have experimented with extracting the topology from 3D shape voxelization and, alternatively, tracing geodesic paths or principle curvature to generate a cross-field of 3D surface data and obtain the coarse layout as the control net.
