Title: NASA SMD’s Transform to Open Science

Date: January 24, 2022

Time: 11 am – 12 pm

Venue: Zoom (zoom link will be emailed to registrants)

Description: SPD-41: The Science Information Policy goals are to maximize the benefits from federally funded research through the practice of open science while minimizing the burden on scientists. This policy was created based on recommendations from SMD’s Strategy for Data Management and Computing for Groundbreaking Science 2019-2024 and is based on existing Government directives, NASA policy, community best practices, studies by national academies, and community-led studies. Broader Open Source Science Initiatives of SMD will also be described leading up to the Year of Open Science in 2023.

Presenter: Steve Crawford, PhD, NASA SMD Science Data Officer

Bio: Steve Crawford is the Science Data Officer for the Science Mission Directorate.  He leads the implementation of policy and programs to support and coordinate Open Science across the Science Mission Directorate.   Previously, Steve worked at the Space Telescope Science Institute as the manager calibration software for the Hubble, Roman, and JWST.  With a background in astronomy and over 15 years of experience in data management, Steve has explored how new technology can be used to improve the scientific process of discovery and how we can make science more open and inclusive.
