Title

Cancer Metabolic Big Data Analysis in Advancing Targeted Therapeutics

Abstract

Cancers display reprogrammed metabolic activities for malignant cell proliferation mostly due to genetic, epigenetic, or environmental changes such as chemotherapy or cancer-associated microbial influences. Distinctive metabolic signatures can form the basis for meaningful therapeutics. The search for new metabolic dependencies in cancer is limited to targeted or in silico computation. By harnessing the power of our advanced lab resources and technologies using Ultra-High Pressure Liquid Chromatography coupled High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry, we investigated the unique, common, and unknown metabolic fingerprints of human cancer cells in association with most altered cancer-associated factors such as gene alteration, microbiota dysbiosis, and chemoresistance. We identified several novel insights that could advance cancer metabolism research.

Bio

Dr. Iqbal Mahmud is a postdoctoral associate in Dr. Tim Garrett’s Clinical Metabolism and Mass Spectrometry Laboratory at the Department of Pathology, Immunology and Laboratory Medicine, College of Medicine. Iqbal completed his Ph.D. in Medical Sciences from the University of Florida College of Medicine under the supervision of Dr. Daiqing Liao. Previously, he obtained his MS in Biotechnology from the Claflin University, SC under the supervision of Drs. Boroujerdi and Chowdhury. His specific research interest is to investigate the role of altered metabolic states in human disease, particularly inborn errors of metabolism, metabolic dysfunction in malnourished children, cancer, and host-pathogen interface. This research is tightly integrated with basic, translational, and clinical activities with the goal of discovering biomarker, diagnostic technologies, and suitable interventions. The overarching goal of his research is to integrate multiomics technologies (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and lipidomics) at high-throughput level for comprehensive understanding of molecular reason associated with disease state towards the development of precision medicine in patient care. His favorite hobby is gardening. For more info about his research and CV please visit https://orcid.org/0000-0001-7729-8122.
