AI Advances and Applications Virtual Seminar Series

“AI Applications in Agriculture” by Dr. Yiannis Ampatzidis

Assistant Professor in Department of Agriculture and Biological Engineering, and Southwest Florida Research and Education Center

Wednesday, October 14, 2020

ABSTRACT:

The rapid development of new technology and the changing landscape of the online world provide a unique opportunity for developing intelligent agricultural systems for precision applications. Technological advances in machine vision, mechatronics, automation, and artificial intelligence (AI) have enabled the development and implementation of emerging and smart agricultural technologies.

For example, small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with RGB and multispectral sensors have recently become flexible and cost-effective solutions for rapid, precise and non-destructive high-throughput phenotyping. UAVs and AI-based prediction models allow growers to constantly monitor crop health, estimate plant water needs, detect diseases and pests, and quantify pruning strategies and impacts. They represent a low-cost method for image acquisition in high spatial and temporal resolution, and have been increasingly studied for agricultural applications.

This talk will present novel smart technologies that utilize AI for precision agriculture applications. These technologies can be used for accurate disease and plant stress detection, precision spraying applications, as well as robotic fruit and vegetable harvesting.
